Privacy policy

Last updated: 25 September 2026

This policy explains what personal data rooms-eg.com ("we", "us") collects when you use the website, why, who we share it with and how you can control it. We process personal data in line with Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 151 of 2020).

1. Who we are

rooms-eg.com is a housing platform that helps students, workers and expats in Egypt find apartments, rooms and beds, and helps owners list them. For any privacy question or request, write to support@rooms-eg.com.

2. What we collect

Your account

  • Name, mobile number and email address.
  • Your password, stored only as a one-way hash; we can never read it.
  • Optional profile details: photo, a short bio and your preferred language.
  • Whether your phone or email is verified, when you last signed in, and your two-step verification settings (the secret is stored encrypted).

Signing in with Google or Facebook

If you choose "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Facebook", we receive your name, your email address and an account identifier from that provider. We do not receive or store your password, contacts, friends list, posts or profile photo, and we never post anything on your behalf.

What you publish

  • Listings: type, title, description, price, size, rooms and beds, who the place suits, the address, the location you pin on the map, photos, and the contact name, phone and WhatsApp number you enter.
  • Housing requests: the area, budget, move-in date, duration, description and contact number you enter.
  • Reviews you write about owners, and reports you send about listings.

How you use the site

  • Listings you save to your favourites.
  • When you reveal an owner's contact details: which listing, when, and your IP address. We keep this to prevent contact details being harvested.
  • Technical data: your IP address and browser type while you are signed in, and security logs of important account changes.
  • One-time verification codes we send you, which are deleted within a day of expiring.
  • Your email address if you subscribe to our newsletter.

3. What is public

A published listing is visible to everyone, including search engines. It shows the address, the map location, the photos, the contact name, and the phone and WhatsApp number. If you choose to hide your number, only signed-in visitors who ask to reveal it will see it. Your public owner page shows your name, photo, bio, your published listings and approved reviews. Do not put anything in a listing that you do not want to be public.

4. How we use your data

  • To create and secure your account, send verification codes and let you sign in.
  • To publish your listings and housing requests, review them before they go live, and email you when a listing is approved or rejected.
  • To match housing requests with suitable listings.
  • To keep the platform safe: limiting abuse, investigating reports, and removing fake or harmful content.
  • To find and fix errors.
  • To send the newsletter, only if you subscribed.

We do not sell your personal data, we do not show advertising, and we do not use analytics or advertising trackers.

5. Legal basis

We process your data to provide the service you asked for (your account, listings and requests), on the basis of your consent (for example, social sign-in and the newsletter), for our legitimate interest in keeping the platform safe, and where the law requires it.

6. Who we share it with

We share only what each provider needs to do its job:

  • Hosting and backups: our servers, plus encrypted-in-transit backup storage with Cloudflare.
  • Email delivery: the provider that sends our verification codes and notifications.
  • Error monitoring: Sentry receives technical error reports, configured not to include personal details by default.
  • Google and Facebook: only when you use their sign-in buttons. Their own privacy policies apply to what they collect.
  • Maps: map images are loaded from CARTO, and the place names you type into the location picker are sent to OpenStreetMap's search service. Both see your IP address, as any website you load does.
  • Authorities: when Egyptian law or a valid legal request requires it, or to protect people from fraud or harm.

Some of these providers process data outside Egypt. We only use providers that protect personal data to a standard comparable to Egyptian law.

7. Cookies and local storage

We do not use advertising or analytics cookies. To keep you signed in, the site stores a sign-in token and a copy of your basic profile in your browser's local storage. They are removed when you sign out. If you use the Google or Facebook sign-in buttons, those companies may set their own cookies.

8. How long we keep it

  • Account data: for as long as your account exists.
  • Listings: listings expire after 60 days unless you renew them, and stay in your account until you delete them or your account.
  • Verification codes: deleted within one day of expiring. Sign-in tokens expire after 30 days.
  • Backups: kept for up to 14 days, then overwritten.
  • When you delete your account, your data is removed from the live site immediately and from backups within 14 days. See Delete your account and data.

9. Your rights

You can:

  • See and correct your data at any time from your account pages.
  • Delete your account and data yourself. See Delete your account and data.
  • Ask for a copy of your data, or object to how we use it, by emailing support@rooms-eg.com.
  • Unsubscribe from the newsletter by emailing us.
  • Complain to Egypt's Personal Data Protection Centre if you think we have mishandled your data.

We answer requests within 30 days and may ask you to confirm you own the account first.

10. Security

The site is served only over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, two-step verification secrets are encrypted, and staff access is limited to what each role needs. You can turn on two-step verification from your account. No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

11. Children

rooms-eg.com is not meant for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. For significant changes, we will also tell signed-in users on the site or by email.
